Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha, Bahu Fort, Jammu along with prominent personalities
paid floral tributes to Amar Shaheed, Amar Balidani, Sheed-E-Azam Udham Singh.
While speaking on this occasion Sham lal Basson, General Secy Shri Guru Ravi Dass
Sabha Bahu Fort, Jammu said that Udham Singh was born on 26 December 1899 in
Sunam in Sangrur distt to Chuhar Ram and Narain Devi. Later they converted in Sikh
religion and became Sardar Tehal Singh and Harnam Kour. The childhood name of
Udham Singh was Sher Singh and his elder brother was Mukta Singh who became
Sadhu Singh. Sardar Tehal Singh was working as watchman on railway crossing at
village Uppli. Udham Singh’s mother died in 1901. His father expires in 1907. Udham
Singh and brother were given admission in the orphanage. His elder brother died in
- Udham singh was trained in various arts and crafts
. He passed his matriculation in 1918 and left orphanage in 1919.
Udham singh was present in the Jalhianwala Bagh on the fateful Baisakhi day on 13th
April 1919 when peaceful assembly of people was fired upon by Brigadier General REH.

At the age of 19 years Udham Singh defied curfew and was wounded in the course of
retrieving the body of the husband of Rattna devi in the aftermath of the massacre.
Udham Singh considered Rattna Devi as his sister and took her to Multan because she
had come to Amritsar along with her husband.
Subsequently Udham Singh travelled abroad in Africa, United States and Europe. He
Joined moment of Gadar Party. He returned to India and opened a shop as Sighnboard
Painter assuming the name of Ram Mohammad Singh Azad. He also travlled to Jammu
Kashmir and worked as carpenter at Baramula for some months. Then he returned to
Amritsar. He was arrested at Amritsar under Arms Act and was sentenced for 5 Years.
HE remained in Multan and Rawalpindi Jails for 5 Years. He travelled to England for third
time. Udham Singh was greatly influenced by Bhagat Singh and revolutionary group. He
received the information of hanging of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in the Jail.
While addressing the gathering F.C. Satia and Prof. C.L. Shwgotra said that on 13
March 1940 Michael O Dwyer was scheduled to speak at joint meeting of East India
Association and the Centeral Asian Society at Caxeton Hall London. Udham Singh
managed to enter hall with revolver conscealed in a book. Udham singh shot Michael O
Dwyer. After killing Michael O Dwyer, Udham Singh was arrested, After the
assassination of Michael O Dwyer udham Singh was given death sentence. An appeal
was filed by three Barristers. On 15th July 1940 the court of Criminal Appeal heard and
dismissed the appeal of Udham Singh against the death sentence. On 31st July 1940
Udham Singh was hanged at pentonville Jail in London. During the trial Udham Singh
had made a request that his remains be sent back to India but this was not allowed.
In 1974 the remains of Udham Singh were sent to India. The Casket was received by
Indira Gandhi, Shankar Dayal Sharma and Giani Zail singh. On 2nd August 1974 his
ashes were divided into seven urns and distributed one each to Haridwar, Kiratpur
Saheb, Rauza Sharif in Sunam and the museum at Jallianwala Bagh and two urns to the
liberary of the Shaheed Udham Singh arts college in Sunam. In the honour of Udham
Singh, Udham Singh Nagar distict was named in Uttrakhand by Behan Mayawati CM.
Madam Krishna Bangotra director Tapasya Art Drama Party and retd BSNL officer
acted as stage secretary. She also threw light on the life and mission of Shaheed Udham
Singh right from childhood to martyrdom on 31st July 1940 at Pantoneville jail in London
.She also mentioned that Udham Singh also met with Bharat Rattan Baba Saheb Dr B R
Ambedkar in London when Baba Saheb was studying on Problem of Rupee.
Those who paid tributes to Shaheed Udham Singh included Retd. ZEO Tara
Chand , retd director planning Sh M L Bangotra, Brij Mohan Mehra , State president All
India Kashyap Mahasang, Dr. Buti Ram, Parshotam Thapa, B D Naryal , Surjeet Singh
Heer, Om Prakash , Joginder kumar, Madam Veena Bakshi, Moti Ram Angral, Ram lal,
OP Thapa, Rattan Lal Basson, Rattan lal.
