The Library of Government Degree College Kathua celebrated National Librarian’s Day with
great enthusiasm to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library
Science in India. The event aimed to pay tribute to his pioneering contributions and to promote
awareness about the significance of libraries in academic and social development.
The celebration commenced with a floral tribute to Dr. Ranganathan, followed by a welcome
address by the Librarian, who highlighted his life, achievements, and the enduring relevance of
his Five Laws of Library Science. Prof. Sanjay Karlupia, Chief Guest and Incharge Principal of
the College in his address, emphasized the importance of cultivating reading habits, utilizing
library resources effectively, and embracing modern library practices.
Speaking on the occasion, the Librarian of GDC Kathua Mrs. Mansha Khajuria highlighted the
importance of Dr. Ranganathan’s vision in shaping modern library practices and reaffirmed the
library’s commitment to supporting teaching, learning, and research. One of the intern students
of B.LIS. Ria Sambyal also expressed her views on Ranganathan’s Philosophy.
The whole programme was held under the patronage of Prof. Savi Behl, Principal of the College
and under the guidance of Convener, Library Committee Prof. Shivani kotwal. The event was
also graced by library committee members Prof. Neeraj Gupta, Prof. Ambika Rajput, Prof.
Ashan Elahi, Prof. Goutam Singh, Prof. Deepak Gupta and Prof. Shiv Kumar . Students also
actively participated in the program, which included speeches and interactive discussions
encouraging them to explore the library’s diverse collection.
The formal vote of thanks was presented by intern student of M.LIS. Sujata Sharma who
expressed gratitude to all contributors and reaffirming the library’s role as a hub of learning and
knowledge dissemination.
