JAMMU, June 19:
The Friends Welfare Society Members tributed the Indo-Pak War 1971 Hero L/Naik Mohan Lal Lakhotra (Vir Chakra) at his memorial in Bori-Draink here today.
Saluting L/Naik Mohan Lal Lakhotra and highlighting his bravery and sacrifice, Social Activist R.L.Kaith mentioned to gathering that as per the gazette, on the intervening night of December 7, 1971 when he was manning the Medium Machine Gun (MMG), the enemy attacked with heavy artillery fire. Undeterred, he kept on firing at enemy halting its advance thereby enabling own troops to reorganise for a counter attack as a result of which the enemy was forced to retreat. Eventually, his dead body was found at his MMG post but in front of the bunker there were bodies of as many as nineteen enemies including a company commander thereof. For this brave act, he was posthumously conferred with Vir Chakra by the then President of India.
His younger son Havildar Ghari Lal Lakhotra (Retd), daughter Poli Devi, Rajni Devi, Anju Devi, Adv. Yuvraj Bharti, Havildar Jai Kumar Kaith (Retd), Jagdish Raj Kaith, Gopal Verma, Randeep Chanjotra, Mangal Ram Kaith, Rajesh Kumar Chanjotra, Binoo Kumar and many others present on the occasion said, We are very proud of his bravery and urge the Government of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory to name a building, road or institution after him even though belatedly.
On the occasion, langar was also arranged by the Memorial Committee.
